Drabble #41

He had a toothbrush in the bathroom. Not just a toothbrush, but one half of the sink made it seem obviously 'hers' and the other 'his'. There was a drawer, a top drawer at that, filled with his clothes beside her bed. The extra desk in her office that she had been using as a filing station now looked like a properly maintained space instead of a halfway house for paperwork. It had all happened so gradually, but today it all seemed to flood in. She could only blame herself, as each encroachment on her home had been on her terms and most often initiated by her out of necessity or to ease some perceived problem.
Renee had let him keep a change of clothes so that when he stayed over he wouldn't have to run home and always be late in the morning. An extra uniform, other clothes, a toothbrush, razors and all the rest had naturally followed. The desk she had cleaned off in a flurry of filing initiative. She hadn't wanted to share her overflowing desk, so she'd waved him off to the now clean one so he could pour over reports due in the morning. Traine just kept using it and eventually brought over important papers that were always needed for monthly reports. She hadn't really batted an eye at it. Until now.
Sitting on the couch, curled up in the corner drinking a glass of wine, she took a moment to take stock of the situation. Papers lay on the coffee table in semi-neat stacks, all completed. The TV was playing and the lights were off. If she were to turn her head, she'd be able to see the soft glow reflecting off the red-head who sprawled beside her. His presence was felt most because his foot had slid between hers, a comfortable compromise of space for both of them. His breathing was silent, or she couldn't hear it over the explosions coming from the TV.
It had been months in the making. Now he spent most of his off time at her house or with her and she'd grown accustom to him being there. When Traine went home, she couldn't help but feel her house was a bit empty, even with her two huskies taking their place curled up next to her on the floor. They'd been a little less oblivious of the change than her, truth be told. Right now they were across the room, sitting with ears perked and shifting at the noise from the TV. From there, her gaze shifted over to look at her companion. It was just a quick glance, or it was meant to be one, but he had his head cocked towards her and was... staring. She held his gaze a moment, having blinked in surprise, then skirted her eyes away and back to the TV. That was unexpected.
The foot between hers slid away and she readjusted, looking down at the cause of her disturbance and then up at him as he sat up, one leg going to the floor and the other bending towards him. There was the smallest of smiles on his face, an unconscious curling of his lips as he leaned forward, looking at her with bright hazel eyes. She wanted to squirm, and not in a bad way. She was feeling warm now. Her eyes stayed glued to his as he rose and slid from the couch, moving until he was in front of her. He leaned down and grabbed her hand, giving her a bit of a pull. She was still staring, vaguely aware of her irritation at acting so meek, when he pulled her a bit harder, leaning back to take her with him.
Renee unfurled and stood. He started to back up, taking her with him. "Come to bed with me," he said softly, though the smile was still there. It hadn't gotten any wider, surprisingly. Traine was learning, having been on the end of her hot and cold temperament for so long. They were still walking and had reached the hall. Renee hadn't said no, so it was as good as a yes. Once he backed into the bedroom, he closed the door by pushing her into it. He leaned down for a kiss and she acquiesced to his demands.
Afterwards, if she concentrated on it, she could still hear the TV from all the way down the hall. The explosion had to be particularly loud, but she wasn't too concerned. Traine was snoring lightly beside her and Renee looked at his open mouth as he lay on his back, totally passed out. Her lip curled into an amused smile as she sighed, knowing the drool was coming soon and not bothered by it. Instead, her thoughts turned back to the steps that had already been taken. In those few minutes before she let herself fall asleep, she realized she didn't really mind. Renee didn't feel like she'd resigned herself to it. In the end, it would be a willing cohabitation and she was mature enough, secure enough in herself, to accept it and everything it would entail.
