Drabble #7
Jun. 21st, 2006 11:10 amThere seemed to be two reactions to a near death experience. Extreme paranoia and a reckless regard for the second chance at life. The man she had saved seemed to be taking the second one rather seriously. She wondered if it was because he was taking advantage of all the things he had dared never try before since he was supposed to be dead anyway, or if he thought she had some special regard for him and would save him a second time. She knew for a fact that if he relied on the latter he would be dead very soon.
The said man went into battle with such abandon that she seriously worried that his actions would affect everyone else around him, but they all seemed to realize just how stupid he was and showed more caution that usual.
After a while, he seemed to settle. He was still just as stupid as before, but battle experience made it seem more daring and innovative than just being an idiot. He had outlived, not including his near death, more than three quarters of her men, and she had to give him credit for it. The younger troops, much to her dismay, looked up to him and took a lot of his ill-fated advice. None of them died, but they all lost their gullibility much earlier than the seasoned warriors preferred. They didn't appreciate their fun ending so quickly.
So, when it eventually came down to her most trusted men, the fool ended up among them and joined her own personal circle of men and women. He held back none of his admiration for her, but was just as quick to shoot down any less than intelligent ideas from her, citing 'There can only be one reckless moron on the battlefield and that's me.'
She grew to enjoy his company and retarded wittiness, but also was weary of growing jealousies. His amorous looks were not well received by her second in command, though it wouldn't ever show on his face. She just had to keep juggling and try to make everyone happy, but getting so close to what she prayed was the end, she stretched herself thin. She was just thankful that she had at least two men she could rely on, regardless of their feelings for each other.
