This is why we need the Fairtax. each man who buys a beer pays the same tax rate on his beer. but the rich can afford to buy 10 beers; so the rich pay 10 times the taxes that the poor do. (note that 'beer' in my analogy is not income, but something purchased at the retail level; the Fairtax does not tax personal income at all, but rather taxes only the money spent at the Point of Final Distribution.)
